A recent study has found that acupuncture is able to reduce the severity of hot flashes and other symptoms of menopause. A study conducted by the Ankara Training & Research Hospital in Turkey found that acupuncture can be an alternative to herbal remedies and hormone replacement therapy.
World News with Diane Sawyer has a report on acupuncture and menopause which is very informative. Click here to watch; ABC News
This study is very exciting although Chinese medicine has been treating menopausal symtoms with acupuncture, herbal medicine, diet and lifestyle advice for over three thousand years.
Women in this study received acupuncture twice a week for ten weeks, in my own practice I have found that often results can be felt much earlier in treamtent with many women noticing changes after only 4-6 treamtents. I always encourage my patients to pay attention to lifestyle and diet. Often yoga, meditation, pilates are encouraged as well as eliminating stimulants in foods such as caffeine, alcohol and spices. A personalized herbal formula is also advised as this compliments and supplements the acupuncture treatment.
