I recently attended a course in Vancouver by Debra Betts who is an acupuncturist from New Zealand and the authour of” The Essential Guide to Acupuncture in Pregnancy”. I was very excited to see her because I have had her book since it first came out and have had success with using her treatment suggestions. Debra works closely with midwives and has had much clinical experience combining acupuncture with midwifery and Western medical care. Debra is very passionate about providing quality care for women during pregnancy with acupuncture and Chinese medicine.
Often Chinese medicine can provide relief during pregnancy when there are no Western medical treatment available. Acupuncture is able to offer relief for many types of muscular skeletal pain, nausea, hemmorhoids, insomnia, heartburn, varicosities, constipation, insomnia, fatigue, hypertension, and correction of breech position.
Acupuncture involves no medication and although there are certain acupuncture points to avoid during pregnancy if it is performed by a Registered Acupuncturist who has had specialized training in pregnancy there is nothing to be concerned with.
I too love to treat women during pregnancy as there is so much that Chinese medicine can help with. Often women are told there aches and pains, nausea, fatigue etc. is something you just have to suffer with or get through as it is a normal part of pregnancy. I have found that this is not the case and acupuncture can often help with most of womens discomforts during pregnancy as well as increasing the health of the baby.
